1. CIPD Qualifications (Levels 3, 5 & 7)

When it comes to choosing a learning and development qualification, the right level will depend on the skills, knowledge, and experience you already have. CIPD qualifications are among the most respected options for anyone pursuing a career in L&D, especially if you want the flexibility of online learning.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) is the professional body that sets standards for Human Resources and Learning and Development in the UK. Their qualifications are designed to develop and offer you the skills and credibility you need to become a highly skilled L&D practitioner.  

Online CIPD L&D Qualifications Explained 

If you choose the L&D pathway (rather than the HR one), there are three CIPD qualifications for you to choose from, each aligned to a different career stage:

CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice

Best for: Those new to learning and development or the people profession, with little or no prior L&D experience.

The CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice is an entry-level qualification designed to help you break into L&D. It’s ideal if you’re changing careers or starting out and want to build a solid understanding of how learning supports organisational performance.

Studying this course online introduces you to the core principles of people practice, while developing the practical skills employers expect from candidates applying for entry-level L&D and HR roles.

CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in Organisational Learning & Development 

Best for: Professionals with some L&D or HR experience, or graduates looking to study at a higher level.

The CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in Organisational Learning & Development is designed for those ready to move into more advanced or managerial L&D roles, such as L&D Advisor or L&D Manager.

2. A University or Master's Degree

University-based L&D qualifications are typically best for those pursuing senior, specialist, or academic careers as they are often more specialised programmes that focus on specific niches. This might include learning and development within a particular sector, industry, or learner demographic.

These qualifications are especially valuable if you already have a clear idea of the L&D field you want to work in and are looking to reinforce your expertise or differentiate your skill set. By specialising, you can position yourself as a subject-matter expert and open the door to senior, consultancy, or academic roles.

For example, an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification, such as a PgCert, PgDip, or MSc in Learning and Development or Human Resource Development (HRD), offers advanced insight into learning theory, research methodologies, and strategic learning design.

These programmes are well-suited to aspiring L&D professionals seeking a comprehensive, evidence-based understanding of how learning drives organisational performance.

However, it's important to do some research on whether the degree you're looking at aligns with CIPD's rigorous standards. This is because only degrees that align with CIPD standards allow you to apply for CIPD membership (Associate, Chartered Member, or Chartered Fellow), and membership is often:

  • Listed as essential or desirable in job descriptions
  • A requirement for senior L&D or HR roles
  • A marker of professional status

Without CIPD recognition, you may need to complete an additional CIPD qualification later, so always check the fine print. 

3. ILM Qualifications

If you’re looking to develop as a leader in the world of work, a qualification from the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) might be just the thing for you.

Depending on what your current goals are, you can choose from a range of ILM courses from Level 2 through to Level 7, focusing on various topics from leadership to coaching and mentoring. 

Whether you’re an aspiring team leader or an established senior executive, there’s something for everyone. However, if you’re not sure where to start with ILM, we’d recommend one of the following three courses to get you going:

4. CMI Qualifications

Similar to ILM qualifications, CMI qualifications from the Chartered Management Institute can be a great addition to your credentials as an L&D professional.

As the only organisation that can award Chartered Manager status, CMI’s mission is to "raise the quality and standard of management in the workplace", and they do this incredibly well through their qualifications at Levels 2 through 8.

Being that only 1 in 5 managers has a recognised management qualification, gaining a CMI qualification and adding it to your CV is bound to help you land your ideal L&D job and even allow you the opportunity to increase your salary.

This is because each course aligns with real-world job roles and provides learners with the skills that employers are actually looking for, ultimately improving individual performance and helping leaders progress their teams.

While these qualifications can be studied in various ways, you can study a CMI Level 5 or Level 7 qualification online with us if you’re looking for a method that fits your lifestyle.

5) ATD Certifications (CPTD & APTD)

Similar to CIPD, qualifications offered by the Association for Talent Development (ATD) concentrate on real-world learning and development (L&D) applications rather than theory alone. However, ATD is most ideal for those working in the US or global domains, focusing more broadly on talent development, instructional design, and workplace learning: 

  • The Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD)
  • The Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD)

Though unlike CIPD, the ATD route doesn't offer a clear pathway progression and is a competency-based certification based on your acquired skills. So, if you wish to gain the credibility and professional status of Chartered membership in the future, you'd need to add a CIPD qualification to your list of credentials. 

6) City and Guilds Qualifications

Designed to replace the Learning and Development NVQs, City and Guilds qualifications are now available for L&D jobseekers and professionals looking to enhance their knowledge and professional practice.

With an emphasis on vocational learning for foundational L&D roles, City and Guilds courses are great for giving you a thorough grounding in the basic knowledge you’ll need in entry-level positions: 

  • Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Learning and Development 
  • Level 3 Certificate in Learning and Development

If you're looking to progress to a more intermediate role, the Level 4 Award or Level 4 Certificate in Learning and Development are also good options to consider. 

7) CIPD Level 3 L&D Practitioner Apprenticeship

If you’re looking to get started in learning and development but don’t like the idea of studying at university or college, an L&D apprenticeship could be the option for you.

Since apprenticeships combine learning with work, with the CIPD Level 3 L&D Practitioner Apprenticeship, you’ll primarily learn on the job and attend regular tutorials outside of your workplace to reinforce the knowledge you’re building. 

Typically lasting 12 to 18 months, one of the key draws to this type of apprenticeship is that, because you’re employed, you’d be earning money whilst you study.

Generally, apprenticeships run for around one to one and a half years. Many students receive the offer of a full-time job at the company they’re studying at after completing their apprenticeship, too.

If your employer has an annual salary bill below £3million, you could also qualify for the government funding of 95% of your apprenticeship. 

8)  ITOL Diploma in L&D Management

Granted Institute status by the UK government in the year 2000, the Institute of Training and Organisational Learning (ITOL) is dedicated to advancing the development of training professionals.

The interesting thing about ITOL is one of the only professional institutes in the UK that is directly focused on learning and development, rather than other specialisms. Its ethos is founded on the idea that learning and development should be considered a specific professional area itself, rather than just an extension of human resources (HR).

Equivalent to QCF Level 6 & EQF Level 6, the ITOL Diploma in Learning and Development Management is perfect for experienced L&D professionals who are looking to move up the ladder into more senior roles, responsible for formulating, implementing and monitoring L&D in an organisation.

It’s delivered in the form of a four-day, face-to-face workshop with knowledge-focused and workplace-based assignments and a presentation.

If you’re looking for a diploma that’s created by trainers, specifically for trainers, this qualification is for you. 

9. CPD Qualifications

10. LPI Qualifications

A qualification from the Learning and Performance Institute (LPI) is great if you’re an L&D professional looking to develop your practical skills.

LPI certifications have been developed specifically for workplace learning, and they offer a variety of courses, including shorter quick-start courses and two-day expert workshops, all of which can be delivered either online or face-to-face.

If you’re looking for a course that’s perfect for you or your team, it would be worth considering the following options as the working world continues to shift: 

  • Certified Online Learning Facilitator (COLF): the global-leading certification in live online learning facilitation.
  • Certificate in Designing Online Learning (CDOL): where you can learn the necessary design skills to support any of your organisation’s live online learning courses.
