Yes, there is a steady demand for payroll professionals. Every business, regardless of size, must pay employees correctly and comply with tax, payments and customs authority requirements.

As payroll laws become more complex, employers want people who have current knowledge and hands-on skills.

Studying a certified payroll professional course like the ICB & Sage Level 3 Diploma in Payroll Management offers you credible, career-ready skills that employers want, helping you stand out in the job market and increasing your chances of securing roles like:

  • Payroll Manager
  • Senior Payroll Adviser
  • Payroll Director
  • Payroll Advisor
  • Payroll Clerk
  • Payroll Consultant
  • Payroll Administrator
  • Payroll Supervisor

If you're new to payroll, you can also start with the ICB & Sage Level 2 Certificate in Payroll Administration course to learn the basics of the field and develop practical skills.

Yes, you can work in payroll without formal qualifications, especially in entry-level roles. Still, having a recognised qualification helps you find work, build confidence, and progress in your career.

Many employers look for payroll professionals who are accurate, detail-oriented, and knowledgeable about payroll laws and processes.

The ICB & Sage Level 2 Certificate in Payroll Administration is perfect for beginners and helps you develop the core skills employers look for, such as understanding payroll processes, legislation, and using payroll software like Sage.

If you have some experience in payroll or have completed the previous level, moving on to a higher qualification, such as the ICB & Sage Level 3 Diploma in Payroll Management, can help you progress to more senior positions.

Qualifications accredited by the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) are widely recognised across the UK and can improve your employability, especially when combined with hands-on experience using payroll management software such as Sage.

Yes! ICS Learn is an official provider and offers payroll courses through an exclusive partnership with the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) and Sage.

By enrolling on our online ICB & Sage payroll training, you’ll earn an ICB qualification that's recognised in the industry, as well as a digital badge for learning the Sage Payroll software that employers value.

If you have some experience in payroll or a related field, or have experience running a business, you may be able to skip Level 2 and start at ICB & Sage Level 3.

However, we recommend ICB & Sage Level 2 if you’re completely new to payroll or finance and want to build a strong foundation first.

The ICB & Sage Level 3 Diploma in Payroll Management can help you move into more senior payroll positions.

In these roles, you will take on more responsibility for managing payroll and making sure everything stays compliant.

After you finish Level 3, you could be a good fit for roles like:

  • Payroll Manager
  • Senior Payroll Administrator
  • Payroll Specialist
  • Payroll Analyst
  • Payroll Supervisor

These roles typically involve:

  • Overseeing payroll operations
  • Managing more complex payroll tasks
  • Handling statutory requirements
  • Ensuring payroll systems run efficiently within an organisation

Being a payroll manager comes with more responsibility than entry-level roles, as you’ll be overseeing payroll processes, ensuring compliance with legislation, and handling more complex payroll scenarios.

The role requires strong attention to detail, organisational skills, and a solid understanding of payroll systems, tax rules, and statutory payments.

So, yes, while it can be challenging at times (especially when managing deadlines or resolving issues), it gets easier with the right training and experience

That's where the ICB & Sage Level 3 Diploma in Payroll Management comes in, helping you gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in a rewarding career.

The terms accounting, payroll, and bookkeeping are all key areas of finance, but they focus on different tasks within a business.

Bookkeeping is the day-to-day recording of financial transactions. This includes:

  • Recording sales and purchases
  • Tracking income and expenses
  • Managing invoices and receipts
  • Reconciling bank statements

This work forms the foundation for accounting.

Accounting is broader and more strategic than bookkeeping, though, with accountants using financial records created by bookkeepers to:

  • Prepare financial reports
  • Analyse business performance
  • Manage budgets and forecasts
  • Handle tax returns and compliance
  • Provide financial advice

In short, bookkeeping records the data, while accounting interprets and uses it.

Payroll focuses specifically on paying employees correctly and on time. This includes:

  • Calculating wages and salaries
  • Managing tax and National Insurance deductions
  • Processing payslips
  • Handling pensions and benefits
  • Submitting payroll reports to the tax authority (e.g. HMRC)

Payroll can sit within accounting or bookkeeping roles, but it's often treated as a specialised area because of the rules and compliance involved.

The knowledge unit covers payroll management in the construction industry, including specialist tax and reporting rules. At the end of this section, you’ll complete a short 10-question knowledge test to check your understanding. It isn’t timed, and you’ll have multiple attempts, but you must pass it before progressing.

For the practical unit, you’ll complete simulations and real payroll tasks using Sage Payroll management software, including processing payroll runs and producing reports. You’ll also complete a full practice simulation to help you prepare for the final assessment.

The final assessment tests your ability to complete payroll tasks accurately and respond to questions based on your work. If needed, you can retake this assessment for an additional fee.

Once you’ve successfully completed the course, Sage will award a digital badge, and ICS Learn will notify the ICB, granting you your ICB & Sage qualification and exemption from the ICB Level 2 Certificate and its exam.
