CMI Level 3 Diploma FAQs

Coaching and mentoring are both used to support people's development, but they take different approaches. Coaching is usually focuses more on helping someone work towards specific goals, improve performance or develop particular skills. Mentoring, on the other hand, draws more on the mentor’s own experience to support longer-term development.

A coach usually guides by asking questions and listening, as well as giving feedback, helping the coachee find their own answers. A mentor is often more direct, offering advice and sharing their experience when it is helpful.

Both mentoring and coaching can help individuals and teams. Knowing when to use each one is important for building strong workplace relationships.

The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) is the only organisation in the world that can award Chartered Manager status – the highest professional recognition you can achieve as a manager or leader.

With over 60 years of experience and a Royal Charter to its name, CMI is a globally respected authority on leadership and management. It supports more than 100,000 members worldwide, setting the standard for what great management looks like.

CMI qualifications are recognised by employers across industries, helping you build the strategic skills, professional credibility, and career confidence you need to take the next step in your leadership journey.

The right CMI course for you depends on your experience and career goals.

CMI Level 3 courses are ideal for current or aspiring first line managers, supervisors and team leaders. You can choose to build your management skills or focus on coaching and mentoring:

Completing the Level 3 Diploma means you will be eligible for Foundation Chartered Manager status (fCMgr), subject to retention of your CMI membership.

CMI Level 5 courses are designed for mid-level managers who usually report to a senior manager or business owner.

CMI Level 7 courses are designed for senior managers and directors. They're ideal if you have responsibility for strategically leading an organisation.

Completing the Level 5 or Level 7 Diploma then grants you a fast-tracked route to Chartered Manager status, the most prestigious management accolade!

The CMI Level 3 Diploma in Coaching and Mentoring is broadly comparable to qualifications such as A Levels and Advanced Apprenticeships.

That doesn’t mean the course is the same as an A Level, but it means that it sits at a similar level of difficulty.

This makes it a useful qualification if you’re working as or working towards a role such as Team Leader, Supervisor or First Line Manager.

Yes! The CMI Level 3 Diploma is the most comprehensive qualification in the Level 3 Coaching and Mentoring suite.

It gives you access to a wider range of specialist modules than the Award or Certificate, allowing you to tailor your learning to your career goals. This makes it a great accredited coaching and mentoring course if you're looking for a more in-depth qualification that will support your long-term career progression.

Yes! The CMI Level 3 Diploma can help strengthen your CV if you’re already working as or applying for team leader, supervisor, or first line manager roles.

While no qualification can guarantee you a new role, gaining a recognised qualification can help you demonstrate your commitment to professional development. It gives you practical coaching and mentoring knowledge to draw on when you work as or are planning to apply for roles such as Team Leader, Supervisor or First Line Manager.

After completing the CMI Level 3 Diploma in Coaching and Mentoring, you can apply what you’ve learned to support individuals and teams more effectively in roles such as Team Leader, Supervisor or First Line Manager.

If you want to continue developing your management skills, CMI recommends Level 3 First Line Management qualifications as a possible progression route.

Alternatively, if you want to take your coaching development further, you could explore a CMI Level 5 Professional Coaching Practice qualification, which focuses on developing professional coaching skills at a higher level.
